Flexible, but often sore, tired or unsteady? You're not alone, and you don't have to just put up with it. At Reset Physiotherapy Brunswick, we help people with hypermobility feel stronger, steadier and more in control of their bodies.
What is hypermobility?
Hypermobility means some or all of your joints move further than most people's. It's often inherited and is more common in women. Plenty of hypermobile people have no problems at all. For others, extra joint movement comes with pain, fatigue and instability.
When symptoms are part of the picture, it may be described as:
Hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD)
Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), a connective tissue condition diagnosed by a doctor
You don't need a formal diagnosis to see us. If we think further assessment would help, we'll let you know and work with your GP.
Signs hypermobility might be affecting you
You've always been "double-jointed" or very flexible
Your joints ache, often in several places at once
Joints click, feel loose, or slip out of place
You sprain your ankles or other joints easily
Your neck and shoulders always feel tight, sometimes with headaches
You get tired quickly, or pain flares after busy days
Sitting or standing still for long periods is uncomfortable
Stretching feels good at the time but doesn't seem to help
How we help
Hypermobility care isn't about more stretching. It's about helping your body feel supported within the range it already has. Your plan is built around you and may include:
Strength and control work to help the muscles around your joints share the load
Body awareness and balance training so your joints feel steadier day to day
Hands-on treatment to ease tight, sore areas during flare-ups
Pacing and load planning to break the boom-and-bust cycle
Pain education so you understand what's happening and why
Breathing and slow movement to calm tension and a busy nervous system
We go at your pace. Progress is often gradual, and small wins are important!
Your first visit
We listen. We'll hear your full story, including past injuries, what you've tried and what you want to get back to
We assess. We'll look at how your joints move, your strength, balance and control, and what's driving your symptoms.
We explain. You'll leave with a clear picture of what's going on.
We start. Most people get some hands-on treatment and a couple of simple exercises to begin with.
We recommend booking a Long Initial Assessment (60 min) if you have lots going on, so there's time to cover everything.
